Arizona Green Party Candidate Endorsement Statement

Recent reporting by the Phoenix New Times, Arizona Mirror, and Yellow Sheet highlights a growing issue: candidates who are not aligned with the Arizona Green Party's values are attempting to use the party's ballot line. In Arizona, a candidate's party label on the ballot does not necessarily indicate membership in—or endorsement by—that party. This distinction is especially important as we approach the 2026 election cycle. These "sham candidate" tactics are a predictable outcome of the system created by the Republican and Democratic parties. Political operatives are incentivized to use third-party ballot lines to split the vote and benefit their preferred candidates. Others pursue these routes because Arizona's ballot access requirements for independent and third-party candidates are unnecessarily burdensome, costly, and vulnerable to legal challenges. Arizona is experiencing a steady rise in independent and unaffiliated voters, highlighting a clear demand for more meaningful choices beyond the two-party system. This makes it all the more important that ballot labels accurately reflect candidate affiliation and endorsement, so voters can make informed decisions. There are clear solutions. Reforms supported by the Arizona Green Party—such as Ranked Choice Voting and Proportional Representation—would reduce incentives for this behavior. The Arizona Legislature could also act by easing ballot access requirements, reforming the signature challenge process, and allowing small parties to nominate candidates by convention. The Arizona Green Party has recently undergone its formal endorsement process for the 2026 election cycle. Only candidates formally endorsed through this member-led process are recognized as Arizona Green Party–endorsed candidates for purposes of party communication and support. The Arizona Green Party is an Eco-Socialist political organization that has achieved statewide party recognition and ballot status. The Four Pillars of the Green Party are; Grassroots Democracy, Social Justice, Ecological Wisdom, Peace and Non-Violence. To learn more about the Arizona Green Party go to www.azgp.org.
